We are a friendly chamber-sized rehearsal orchestra, conducted by Leon Coates. We play for our own enjoyment, rather than working towards concerts, and this enables us to play a wide variety of repertoire in an unpressured environment. We play a programme of music (typically an overture and two symphonies, or maybe a concerto) for 3 to 4 weeks, before starting a new programme.
Our repertoire includes Beethoven, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Bizet, Schumann, Mozart, Schubert and other composers . We borrow music from the Reid Music Library and also have a large, and expanding, library of music of our own. A reasonable level of playing expertise is required, but there is no audition. The orchestra provides excellent practice for improving playing and sight-reading skills, and sheet music may be borrowed for practising.
We would be happy to take on extra players. Violinists and violists are particularly needed at present, but other instruments would also be welcome. If you're interested in joining us, please see 'Contact Us' for further details.
